Tumblr Plans to Ban All Porn

Tumblr has announced lately that they will be taking down adult NSFW content from the platform. The microblogging service has upset many users. They made the announcement that from December 17th 2018, adult content will no longer be acceptable. They are also encouraging users to flag content for removal. This is bad news for many adult entertainment brands if they have been using the platform to promote their services or products.

So, what are they planning on banning in particular? According to Tumblr it will no longer be acceptable to post any media that depicts “real-life human genitals or females presenting nipples.” It also means that all content- including photos; video; GIF’s and illustrations that depict any sex acts.

Arguably, Tumblr over the years has been the social media platform of choice for artists. As well, it has been popular for people who were looking to share their adult content online to like-minded individuals. This is mostly down to other platforms having such strict user guidelines. Other accounts have also been found to ban accounts that breach these terms and conditions.

This drastic action has come down to Tumblr being removed from the iOS app store a few weeks back. They were removed from the app store due to an extreme issue with some of the content posted on the platform. Tumblr released a statement explaining that they have a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to media that features child sexual exploitation or abuse.

Although Tumblr are looking to ban all porn; they are trying to take into account the artist and health communities as they will not be banning media that is focused around breastfeeding and other intimate medical related media. Content such as erotic stories or news will also be tolerated by the site. However, with the community now being told to flag posts to delete you can imagine some innocents may suffer from Tumblr’s new policy.
